Grand Egyptian Museum GEM – the Grand Opening

The visuals team of Real Egypt made their first visit to GEM immediately after the Grand Opening event on 1 November.

If you watched the Grand Opening on internet or television, you briefly saw the museum’s newly opened galleries. We wanted to share with you more of what you can see when you visit.

This video is 7 minutes, so make your favorite drink and get comfortable, then click play to take a step back into ancient Egyptian life.

In a future post we will share with you photos of significant artefacts in GEM, so you can enjoy the artistry of the ancient Egyptians without the reflections of lights on glass display cabinets (difficult to avoid in video.)

After years of anticipation, and following the “soft opening” when much of the museum was open to visitors but two of the most important galleries were yet to be completed, you can now also see the treasures of Tutankhamun and the solar boat galleries.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities partnered with TikTok to live-stream the opening, which was also live-streamed on several YouTube media channels, on Egyptian television, and in large public spaces in Egypt.
Egyptians held watch parties, and social media was flooded with images of the event on the night and in the following days. The event included performances and references to Egypt’s past and present.
Special silver and gold coins and stamps were issued to commemorate the event.

A visit to GEM and other significant places in Cairo with one of our expert guides can be added to your Dahabiya Nile Sailing tour.
