Recently finished extensive restoration project and now open to the public – Heliopolis Cairo

Baron Empain’s Palace, built as a reflection of a Hindu temple, known as Qasr el Baron in Arabic,

The palace tower stands out in an otherwise stark landscape, making its very distinct features stand out from the rest of the city. The palace reflects the high status of its owner and marks a major milestone in the urban landscape of Heliopolis. Baron Empain’s palace is one of the most prominent Monuments in the capital due to its unique and innovative image attracting crowds of pedestrians on the road.

It was founded by Edward Louis Joseph Empain between 1907 and 1911. He was a Belgian businessman who was awarded the title “Baron” by the King of Belgium, on account of his economic contributions. The French architect Alexander Marcel was tasked with building this masterpiece and The palace interior design was by Georges-Louis Claude. Inspired mostly by the Hindu temples of South India and constructed in what is called “Heliopolis style”.

Heliopolis style is an early 20th-century architectural style developed in the new suburb of Heliopolis in Eastern Cairo, Egypt. The Belgian Cairo Electric Railways and Heliopolis Oases Company, responsible for planning and developing the new suburb, created the new style to implement an exclusive distinctiveness to the design of its buildings. This revivalist style is a synthesis of Medieval Egyptian Revival, Moorish Revival, Persian Revival, and European Neoclassical architecture styles.
