April 18th each year is International Day for Monuments and Sites, also known as World Heritage Day.
The aim of the day is to promote awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage, the vulnerability of sites and monuments, and the efforts required for their protection and conservation.

The theme for 2025 is “Heritage under Threat from Disasters and Conflicts: Preparedness and Learning from 60 years of ICOMOS Actions”. Sadly this theme is more relevant than ever, including in countries close to Egypt.
Egypt has seven sites registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, including six cultural heritage sites: Historic Cairo, Memphis and its necropolis from Giza to Dahshur, Ancient Thebes and its necropolis in Luxor, Abu Mena in Alexandria, the ancient monuments of Nubia in Aswan, and St. Catherine in South Sinai. Additionally, Egypt has one natural heritage site, Wadi Al-Hitan (Whales Valley) in Fayoum.
